A Teacher’s Guide to Online Classroom Etiquette

September 11, 2020

A teachers guide to online classroom etiquette | lets be game changers lets be game changers

Do you want to create an excellent learning environment for your online class?

The pandemic put a stop to the regular routines for an individual’s education. This caused 4-year institutions to have a 6-8% decline in the Fall 2020 enrollment. Most students don’t want to risk getting close to strangers.

Online classes became the go-to method of education for the year. It’s still not as effective, though, since there is no established etiquette in an online classroom. As a teacher, it’s your job to establish and remind your students of the online classroom etiquette.

Doing this will help you have an easier time teaching and make it easier for your students to learn. Read on to know how you can manage your online classrooms.

1. Remind Students to Wear Earphones

During a live lesson in a classroom, unexpected noise can disrupt the entire class. This often happens because students don’t wear headphones. The microphone of a laptop doesn’t have a good enough filter to make it good for a classroom.

This makes everyone hear what they hear and can cause a distraction. Encouraging students to wear earphones or headsets solves this problem. Their microphones only pick up sound that’s close to them.

It can still pick up sounds that are loud enough, but students can fix this using the noise suppression feature of most devices. This helps you create a classroom free of any background noise.

Reminding them to wear their headphones helps them keep any noise from the class to themselves. This also helps them speak up even if they’re keeping their voice to a near-whisper.

2. Timeout Any Student Flooding the Chatbox

The bane of any online classroom is any student that floods the chatbox. They will keep sending messages that aren’t helpful to the current lesson. This makes it harder for students to get their questions in since their messages get pushed up too fast.

The easiest way to solve this issue is to kick them off the classroom. However, doing this isn’t a professional way to approach this problem. This also means they will miss the lesson, causing them to fall behind a bit

You can time out their profile, instead. This will prevent them from sending anything in the chatbox but keep them in the class. It’s an excellent solution to chat flooders since they can still listen to your lectures.

3. Encourage the Use of Proper Language

Lessons can go from formal to informal in the blink of an eye. All it takes is a student to use informal language once and everyone else will follow suit. This makes it important to keep the language in your classroom proper and formal.

Discourage the use of foul language by giving the students warning and penalties. This also removes the student’s habits of cursing when they encounter an inconvenience.

Use this to also encourage the use of proper grammar in the classroom. It’s a great way to make English lessons easier for them later on.

4. Remind Students It’s a Serious Environment

Proper online classroom etiquette means that you must turn the classroom into a serious environment. This is important because some students are prone to making jokes out of anything.

While it’s not a bad thing every once in a while, one made in dark humor can make the rest of the classroom uncomfortable. It can even offend some students to the point of leaving the classroom.

A good way to keep this from happening is by steering the conversation away from the kid’s joke. Waving it off is a simple way of doing this and focusing the attention of the other students back to the lesson.

5. Keep Yourself Available for Questions Anytime

Accept that not everyone can learn at the same pace. Some children will have trouble absorbing the information you give them during your lecture. You can help them catch up by pausing after each segment of the lesson.

This gives students some time to ask the questions that they want to ask. Give them a considerable amount since the latency in online classrooms can delay any response.

Some kids are too timid to ask their questions, though. A great way to help them is to tell them they can send you a private message for any inquiry they have.

You should also remind students that they can send you an email anytime. This is a good way to optimize concurrent classrooms, too. This makes it easier for students to approach you even outside the classroom.

6. Keep the Chat Box Civil

Classroom management means that you must know how you can keep your students in order. This is most important when it involves the chatbox. As mentioned above, this is the most volatile part of any online classroom.

This is because students can bring drama from their personal life into the chatbox. It can also be because some students use excessive emojis in their messages. This can trigger a landslide of people doing the same thing in the class chatbox.

Prevent this by reminding students to keep unrelated matters off the chatbox. Tell them to settle affairs in private to keep things in order in the classroom. If you want to help, though, remind students they can discuss these matters with you after class.

7. Pay Attention to Each Student in Your Classroom

Each student in your classroom is unique in how they study and learn. This also means that some may have unique reactions to how you talk or towards certain words. A good teacher will observe each student and learn how they can make the classroom better for them.

You need to access research-based classroom behavior management strategies. It takes dedication, but doing so helps you create the ideal learning environment. Classroom behavior management will bring the best out of your students.
