Evan Tynan has always had a love for sports. This love is what inspired him to choose a career in the industry. In addition to his work as a marketing and creative design specialist, he follows many teams for personal enjoyment, including the Colorado Rockies. Today, he shares the latest news about his hometown team.
Kris Bryant is Back for 2023
Kris Bryant missed the 2022 season due to injuries. The outfielder signed a $182 million, seven-year contract with the Rockies. For the Rockies, this was the biggest free agent deal for a position player, ever. Then, injuries took him out of the game.
He was sidelined due to back strain. Then, in August, planter fasciitis and a bone bruise took him out for the season. Bryant states that he’s back to 100%, and is ready for spring training.
Charlie Blackmon Returns
Charlie Blackmon injured his meniscus in Sept. 2022, according to Evan Tynan. He will return for the 2023 season, where he will exercise his player option. There’s some debate about whether he will play beyond 2023. However, if he does, it’s unlikely he’ll be wearing a Rockies jersey.
The team seems to favor younger players, and Blackmon has significant wear and tear from his long career.
Blackmon’s accomplishments include the 2nd most career hits, with 1590, and 2nd most career total bases, with 2613. He’s first in most career triples, with 58.
Scott Oberg Retires
Scot Oberg was drafted to the Rockies in 2012, during the 15th round. He was promoted to the Majors in 2015.
He performed well, with an ERA of 5.09, and 44 strikeouts during the 58 innings he played that season. He found his stride in 2018, with an 8-1 record, 245 ERA, and 57 strikeouts in 58 innings played.
Injury trouble began in 2020 when he was put on the injured list due to blood clots. Unfortunately, this problem would continue. Over the next few years, he had 3 surgeries to correct blood clots in his pitching arm.
The Rockies denied his player option in November 2022. For the first time in his career, Oberg was a free agent. In January 2023, he announced his retirement on Instagram.
Oberg is currently a special assistant to baseball operations for the Rockies.
Austin Gomber Avoids Arbitration
Austin Gomber is a left-handed pitcher. Evan Tynan states that he agreed to a $1.65 million salary, for one year, which allowed him to avoid arbitration.
Gomber had a great start with the Rockies. He arrived in time for the 2021 season, as part of the 2021 Nolan Arenado trade.
He had an ERA of 4.53, along with a 23.2% strikeout rate, and a 44.3% ground ball rate. Last year was a struggle for the pitcher, with a particularly difficult first half of the season. He ended the season with a 5.56 ERA.
