What Happens If I’m at Fault in a Car Accident? 5 Dos and Don’ts

January 27, 2020

What happens if im at fault in a car accident 5 dos and donts | lets be game changers lets be game changers

There are over 6 million car accidents every year in the United States. With over 276 million vehicles on the road, there’s a good chance you could be involved in the next.

You might ask, “What happens if I’m at fault in a car accident?”

Here are a few things to do and avoid in this situation:

1. Never Admit Guilt

Even if you feel you clearly caused an accident, avoid apologizing or taking the blame.

When we are involved in accidents or collisions, we want to appear caring and concerned for the other party. This might make you a nice person, but it could actually hurt you later.

By apologizing or releasing the other driver from blame, you could be implying that you were the one who caused the accident.

You can still check up on the other driver, but it’s best to remain silent about taking blame.

2. What Happens If I’m at Fault In a Car Accident and I Get a Ticket?

Always fight any ticket given to you in an accident. Even if both parties are given some form of citation, it is always in your best interest to challenge the ticket in court.

The other driver or drivers can use that ticket in civil court to show you are at fault.

A cheap ticket may seem like something to pay and move past, but the cheap ticket could turn into a multi-million dollar lawsuit against you.

Here is what you need to know if you receive a citation from an accident.

3. Do Not Leave the Scene of the Accident

It doesn’t matter who is at fault, never leave the scene of the accident. Fleeing the scene will only escalate things for you.

While you may be stuck with paying for someone’s damages in civil court, leaving the scene of an accident can land you in prison.

Hit and run is a misdemeanor or felony depending on the severity and state you reside. But don’t take the chance.

4. Avoid Social Media

We live in a world where social media is part of all our lives directly or indirectly. Don’t overshare or reveal details of the accident.

Even if you think your settings are private, investigators can figure out what you post on social media. Pictures and explanations can all be used against you in a civil court case.

Posts that might seem harmless can help insurance companies and plaintiffs build a case you are a reckless or dangerous driver that might cause another accident.

5. Hire a Lawyer

If you think you may be at fault, hire a lawyer immediately. No one wants to have to spend money, but an experienced attorney can actually save you money and possible criminal charges.

They can advise you on things to say, what to do, and information to save. Just because you might be at fault, doesn’t mean you should be stuck with all the burden or responsibility.

There could be information you do not know that your lawyer can discover.

Stay Safe

While you go out on the roads, remember to pay attention to your surroundings and other drivers.

If you find yourself asking, “What happens if I’m at fault in a car accident?”, then you’ll know what to do and what to avoid.
