8 Important Steps to Building a Great Company Culture at Work

February 19, 2019

Successful businesses often thrive in the culture they create. Building a brand begins with the people who create it.

Build a great company culture to strengthen your business at its core. Watch how this translates to success!

8 Strategies to Build a Great Company Culture

Strength comes from within. Empower and connect the people who work for you by building a tea, culture with these 8 strategies.

1. Create Core Values

Start by looking into the vision and mission statements for your company. What do you claim to stand for?

But, core values should not only come from management. You should ask everybody what values would enrich their work environment and keep your vision and mission on track.

Creating core values together will help everybody feel like they hold a stake in the company. This builds loyalty.

Take this one step further and actually put these core values in plain sight. This will remind everybody what type of environment to create each day.

2. Hire Good People

Center your hiring process around finding out what the candidate values. Sure, you want somebody qualified, but not at the expense of attitude. Select people who enhance your company culture.

You can easily train anybody to work in most positions. However, you will find it much more difficult to train personalities and beliefs.

Design an interview process to discover more about the person than their experience and qualifications. Also, conduct several interviews with different trusted people in the company, to get multiple perspectives. Selecting different people to always conduct one of the interviews also shows employees that they help create their workspace.

3. Schedule Regular Powwows

Pick a day and time to bring everybody together for a powwow, weekly or biweekly. Make it a time to:

  • Sum up recent successes
  • Bring up a focus area
  • Create goals
  • Let your employees ask questions or bring up concerns

This type of communication will keep everybody on the same page. This is essential in building a team culture.

Try to keep it positive by sandwiching and negatives into the middle of the meeting. Rather than calling them problems or mistakes, try to use words like focus areas.

Though you may feel like this takes an hour away from production, you will find that it actually increases productivity by keeping people focused and involved. Powwows also bring together and make them feel more like a team.

4. Engage in Team Building Activities

Team building activities help coworkers understand each others’ strengths, weaknesses, and interests while bonding. This will strengthen their teamwork for office projects, thus benefiting your company.

Fantastic team building activities include:

Escape Rooms

Just as it sounds, your team gets locked into a room and needs to work together to find the key. They must collaborate to solve puzzles and riddles in order to escape.

Ariel Adventure Park

An ariel adventure park harnesses you up into the trees to get through varying levels of obstacle courses. Though each person needs to conquer their own fear and overcome obstacles individually, team encouragement and talking each other through the most difficult parts will build respect.

Games

Playing fun games can spark healthy competition and build loyalty between teammates. It will also help them learn a little bit more about one another.

Pictionary pairs people in teams. While one partner draws, the other guesses the word or phrase being depicted.

The game, Truth and Lies, puts each member of the team into the spotlight to pose three facts about themselves. They say two truths and one lie, and everybody else tries to spot the lie.

Each game builds a different type of team strength. Plus, your team enjoys some time together.

Capture the Flag

This game requires collaboration, strategy, and stealth. You can play any variation to create a few hours of fun.

5. Create a Social Media Group

Almost everybody uses social media these days. Use it to your advantage in creating a good company culture.

Create a facebook group and invite only the people in your company. Rather than make it strictly work-related, use it for bonding.

Encourage people to share funny memes, ask for project advice from home, and share social events. This will create inside jokes and make everybody feel a little closer at the office. It also makes it easier to plan group events.

6. Recognize Accomplishments

People who feel appreciated work harder. Recognize your employees for their hard work.

If your company can swing the cost, hold an annual banquet and give out awards. Choose from these products by FineAwards.com to really make a statement.

Another way to recognize employees regularly is to give little bonuses for top performers or even put up pictures of the employee of the month. Little gestures will go a long way for culture building and boosting performance.

7. Build Leaders

Make leadership an integral part of your company performance. You do not only want leaders in management. You want to build these skills into every employee down the line.

Ways to build a community of leaders includes:

  • Gifting your employees with good leadership books (start with Winning With People, by John Maxwell)
  • Sending them on paid leadership retreats from time to time
  • Always empowering them

If one leader can build an empire, imagine what a company full of them can do.

8. Lead By Example

Leadership starts with you. This means that you should always act in accordance with your company’s values.

Attend the leadership training, pop into powwows, and engage in team building activities with your employees whenever possible. Inspire your employees by showing them true leadership.

If you do this, you will connect with your workers and make them feel like an integral part of the business, which they are. This might be the most important aspect of building good company culture. If they believe in you, then they will also believe in the company, and you will see this in the progress.

Build a Successful Company Culture

Follow these 8 steps upward to great company culture. Developing a culture of collaboration and respect will give allow your business to operate at its full potential.
