Adding Zen to Your Outdoors: How to Make a Fish Pond

March 1, 2019

Does your outdoor space feel too artificial? Learning how to make a fish pond is a great way to bring a natural element to your space.

A fish pond not only brings you closer to nature, but the sound of running water can make your space calm and serene. Spending just 30 minutes a day in nature can provide such health benefits as improved metabolism, mood, and sleep.

While the benefits of a fish pond are obvious, how to build one may not be. It involves more than simply digging a hole in the ground.

To find more about how to build a fish pond in your yard and improve your home, check out the guide below.

How to Make a Fish Pond

Although making a fish pond isn’t as easy as digging a hole and throwing some fish in, it’s not the most difficult landscaping project. If you follow these simple tips, you’ll be finished and relaxing by your new pond in no time.

Make a Plan

Of course, the first step toward your new fish pond is to plan it out. You’ll need to step outside and measure the area you have available. Then, decide how large you want your fish pond to be.

Remember that certain pond plants need a specific amount of sunshine and shade per day. Additionally, water flows better in natural shapes without corners.

Not only do you need to determine your pond’s size, but also its depth. Depth can also affect what kind of life will flourish in your pond.

Dig Your Pond

Once your plan is complete, you can dig your pond. If in the United States, make sure to call Digline to find out where all your utility lines are located. This is legally required.

Make sure to keep everything even and level as mistakes will be obvious once finished and you may need to redo the entire project.

Installing Everything

This is the most difficult part. You’ll need a pump, bottom drain, liner, eduction jets, a skimmer, bead filter, UV clarifier and water return.

The pump helps recirculate the water. This is needed to oxygenate the water so the fish can breathe. It also helps clean the water. The hose is easy to install, but you legally need a professional contractor for the electrical connections.

After that, put in a bottom drain with a cover. Then, place your liner on your pond. Make sure the liner extends at least one foot beyond the pond’s edges.

You also need jets and a skimmer to create a current and remove debris. Make sure to check the filter regularly to avoid damage to your pump system.

The bead filter and UV clarifier also help with cleaning and hygiene. They kill algae blooms and catch debris.

Finally, figure out how you want your water to be fed back into the pond. You can also contact the professionals at this website for useful fish pond accessories.
