The extra fees are where Scribie’s model can start to be less than ideal. There are extra fees for exact verbatim transcription, files with noisy backgrounds or accented speakers, added time stamps, and more. But all of these are optional and, at the end of the day, you get a good-quality transcription.
Rev
Rev is an excellent audio transcription service with simple fees and a great turnaround time. All of Rev’s transcription services are $1 per minute – the end, no added fees. They guarantee a twelve-hour turnaround time for files less than thirty minutes, which is one of the fastest on the market.
Like some of their competitors, Rev does offer extra services for a little extra per minute, but those are optional. If you have a file longer than thirty minutes and you still need it back quickly, you can opt into their Shorter Turnaround service. Your file will be divided up into three different chunks and worked on by different people, before being stitched together at the end.
Temi
Temi is a non-human-based transcription service that offers quick, cheap transcription services. Their fee is only $0.10 per minute of audio, and their turnaround time is one-quarter of the length of the file. So, for instance, a twenty-minute file would take five minutes to transcribe.
The sacrifice you make for speed and price with Temi is accuracy. Whereas human-based services tend to have an error rate smaller than 10 percent, Temi comes in around 45 percent.
This is not the worst transcription error rate (Sonix comes in around a whopping 97 percent), but it isn’t stellar.
TranscriptionPanda
TranscriptionPanda is another human-based service with a much better accuracy rate. Their transcriptions tend to have only about a 5 percent error rate, and their pricing is $1.20 per minute. As with other similar services, there are extra fees associated with things like added timestamps and verbatim options.
Transcripts from TranscriptionPanda usually come back within two to three days, putting them in the middle of the road in terms of work speed. You can opt to get your transcript back within twenty-four hours for $2.40 a minute. If you have time to spare, you can drop the transcription price to. $0.79 a minute and get your files back in a week or so.
GoTranscript
GoTranscript is another human-based transcription service that has a little cheaper base fee than some of its competitors. Their prices start at $0.90 a minute, as opposed to the $1 of some other services. But like many human-based services, the trick comes in with the extra fees.
If you want a verbatim translation or time stamps added, you’ll pay an additional $0.25 per minute. Moving the delivery timeline up from five days to one will run you an extra $0.20 per minute. Having more than one person in the recording will mean another quarter per minute, too.
Otter
Otter is an automatic transcription services, which means lower prices and quicker return times.
If you’re only doing a little bit of transcription, this is an awesome option, as it does have a free version. The paid version doesn’t kick in until you’ve transcribed more than 6,000 minutes of audio per month.
One of the great perks of Otter is their mobile app, which makes transcribing on the go a snap.
Their platform is well-designed and easy to use, and has neat features like automatic speaker identification. It also has an astounding 15 percent error rate, making it one of the best automatic transcription services.
TranscribeMe
TranscribeMe is another human-based service that offers a variety of delivery speeds and levels of review. Their baseline price is $2.00 per minute and includes time stamps and a three-day turnaround. For a little more ($2.75 per minute), you can get their verbatim service. If you’re looking to save some money, their first draft service skips one of their two usual layers of review and costs only $0.79 per minute.
Due, no doubt, to their rigorous review policy, TranscribeMe has one of the lowest error rates in the industry. They average only a 5 percent error rate, which is matched only by TranscriptionPanda and Rev (which comes in at 3 percent). Their web interface is clean and modern, but sometimes encounters glitches.
