“Generally speaking, there is a lot of demand for people with accounting and finance backgrounds,” Iannello points out. “And you don’t have to work for a finance or accounting-specific firm. Many companies in other fields also need finance and accounting experts on hand.”
High demand for specific talents can offer professionals more flexibility with their careers and life. If you want to move to a new city or want to work for a company in a different industry, you’ll have an easier time making your move if the demand for your skillset is high. Not only could this lead to increased compensation, but it could also improve your quality of life.
“I know a lot of people in the field, and the diversity of finance jobs and roles can be quite tremendous. Want to work for nonprofits?” Vince Iannello notes. “You’ll find opportunities. Interested in investigations and crime? Many finances and accounting experts work for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and similar government bodies.”
Of course, if specific career paths sound especially interesting, it’s smart to build up relevant complementary skills outside of finance. For example, if you want to move into marketing, studying psychology can be a helpful way to understand consumer behavior better. By getting a dual degree in marketing and finance or otherwise building up both skills, you can leverage data and analytical skills to run marketing campaigns.
Or, if you’re interested in working in criminal investigations, you might also take classes in law and criminal justice. That way, you can build out a full skill set for investigating financial crimes.
“You really can do anything with an accounting or finance degree, and the job market supports that flexibility,” Vince Iannello says. “It’s a great time to enter the field.”

Many people end up going back to school so that they can enter a new field. While a lot of folks start their career in finance while they are young, older individuals too can consider going into finance and accounting.
“If you’re looking to get out of one career or industry and into another, finance is definitely worth considering,” Vince Iannello concludes. “Experience in your previous field could actually play a vital role in your new career. For example, if you worked as a nurse’s assistant, then moved into accounting, you could work for a healthcare organization and leverage your previous skills to increase understanding.”
So if you’re not enjoying your current career anymore, consider making a switch to finance or accounting. You may be able to improve your income and quality of life while reducing stress along the way.
