Why Your Neck Hurts and How to Treat it

February 23, 2020

Why your neck hurts and how to treat it | lets be game changers lets be game changers

Pain in any part of the neck is a rather common occurrence. There is a myriad of reasons why people experience neck pain; it could be something as simple as sleeping in an awkward position one night to infectious diseases, to serious conditions that need prompt medical attention.

The good news is that most kinds of neck pain go away easily with a little care. However, you should seek a doctor’s help if you cannot spot a single reason why you have pain in your neck. Here are some of the most common causes of neck pain.

Improper Posture

Undoubtedly one of the most common causes of neck pain is sitting or sitting in an improper position for extended time periods. An arched back, resting your arms in an awkward manner while working, or not having enough support on your back are all viable causes for neck pain.

Treatment: If you believe your neck pain is due to spending a lot of time in an awkward position, try to fix your position. Get lumbar support for your chair since that can certainly put a strain on your neck. Other than that, do not sit with an arched back. Using the adjustable features on your chair and your desk will also help take a lot of strain off your neck.

Whiplash

Whiplash occurs most commonly in people who have had car accidents. Whiplash is a condition that causes neck pain and occurs when the muscles of the neck are forcefully moved out of their usual range of motion; mainly when the head is violently jerked.

Pain from whiplash can last for a long time after the accident as well. In fact, if you have had other injuries in the accident, they may be the main cause of concern at the moment and the pain from whiplash will only become evident later.

Keep in mind that whiplash can also occur as a result of sporting injuries.

Treatment: You can easily find whiplash injury treatment in Marietta and surrounding areas as well because it is a very common condition. It is advised that you go to a doctor if you think you are suffering from whiplash, however, you can try icing your neck or taking painkillers to get rid of the pain as well.

Meningitis

Meningitis is an infectious disease in which you experience a fever and a headache along with a stiff, painful neck. The pain in the neck occurs because of the inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and the spinal cord.

Meningitis is a serious health condition and will not go away simply with self-care and speculation. Keep in mind that meningitis can also be fatal.

Treatment: If your symptoms coincide with symptoms of meningitis, you will need to seek medical help immediately. The doctor may put you up on antibiotics and also monitor you. In case you do not have meningitis, you will still need a doctor to rule out the possibility.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Certain cervical issues such as cervical radiculopathy, in which a nerve is pinched between the cervical discs, can also cause neck pain. This type of neck pain is usually described as pins and needles in the neck, or a burning sensation, and maybe an inability to move.

Treatment: Although cervical radiculopathy is not necessarily a debilitating condition, you will need medical attention for it. The doctor may prescribe physiotherapy, painkillers, or anti-inflammatory medicine.

Age-Related Issues

As we grow old, our cervical column loses its integrity and the cervical discs show signs of wear and tear. Bony projections may also develop in the column. The medical term for this condition is cervical spondylosis. This can become the basis for osteoarthritis and other such condition. While none of these are particularly dangerous conditions, they can certainly cause pain and stiffness in the neck and hamper everyday activities for people.

Treatment: Seek medical help if you have age-related pain in the neck. The doctor may prescribe painkillers for you and counsel you on how to care for your neck. You might also need sessions in physiotherapy or chiropractic care.

Stress

Another common reason for neck pain is stress. Stress can cause tension headaches which often radiate from the back of the head to the neck and cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

Other than that, when we are stressed, we tend to hold in a lot of tension in our muscles without realizing it. For example, we will clench our teeth, tense up our shoulders, and keep our neck in a stiff-unmoving position for extended time periods. Holding in such stress for a long time can cause our neck and shoulders to start aching.

Treatment: You do not need immediate medical attention for tension-related to neck pain. You should try to release the tension you are holding in your muscles and relax a little from time to time so you do not build the premises for pain. Other than that, you can take over-the-counter painkillers as well.

Sleeping in the Wrong Positions

Another extremely common cause of neck pain is sleeping in awkward positions. For example, sleeping on two or more pillows unnecessarily, sleeping in a chair, a sofa, or a bus seat. Holding these positions for a long time can cause neck pain that will take a long time to relieve.

Treatment: You can try taking a painkiller to relieve this sort of pain, but what will be more effective is sleeping in the correct position for at least one night. Other than that, try to lowly do neck exercises to bring it back to its original position. You can also read on additional quick tips on how to loosen a stiff neck or prevent neck pain at all.

Other Rare Causes

Neck pain is usually not a serious matter but that does not mean that it cannot be. If your neck pain does not go away after a few days, you might want to visit a doctor and see if there is any potential dangerous issue causing it. In any case, any cause of concern should be taken to a medical professional before you try to resolve it on your own.
