Wisdom teeth or third molars are commonly known as wisdom teeth. There are four molars, two in the upper part and two in the lower part, which are located at the end of the mouth.

What types of teeth make up our mouth?

To learn more and delve into wisdom teeth, it is necessary to review the types of teeth that are in our mouth and what functions they perform. The dentition is made up of a total of 32 teeth whose shapes and functions are different from each other. They are divided into:

Incisors

We have a total of eight (four in the upper jaw and the other four housed in the mandible). There are four ‘chisels’ whose sharp shape is optimal for cutting the food we eat into small pieces . They are located in the front part of our mouth. They are the first permanent teeth to erupt after the primary or milk teeth .

Canines

After the incisors, on their sides, we can find these four teeth (two in the upper part and two in the lower part). Its pointed and sharp shape is perfect for tearing food .They are commonly known as fangs and are the teeth that have the strongest bond between humans and predatory animals due to their ability to tear food.

Premolars

After the canines we will find the premolars. They are eight teeth (four upper and four lower) with a flat surface. With them food is crushed to facilitate the function of swallowing .These types of teeth do not appear with the primary ones, since they are only exclusive to permanent or adult teeth.

Molars

These are our largest teeth. We have a total of 12 of these robust teeth (six on the top and six on the bottom). Grind, grind, chew … among its functions. Milk teeth do have molars, but these are replaced after approximately 10 years of age by premolars. In adulthood, the wisdom teeth are the last four molars . Wisdom teeth are molars that grow on the back of the gums and are the last to come out. They usually erupt in the late teens.

Wisdom extraction, when is it convenient?

Due to lack of space, wisdom teeth can sometimes emerge at an angle or become stuck and only partially erupt. Wisdom teeth that grow like this are known as impacted teeth .If your wisdom teeth are causing severe pain , it is important to see your dentist to have them checked and to see if they need to be removed.
