An Expert’s Guide to Building Efficient Eco-Friendly Homes

September 1, 2020

an experts guide to building efficient eco friendly homes

Nowadays, eco-friendly homes are starting to become the norm in home building and construction. Homeowners want durable, environmentally conscious homes that will save energy and keep the utility bills low.

Eco-friendly is not just a buzz word – it’s a new way of owning a home and caring for the environment. From choosing the right materials to finding builders who specialize in eco-friendly construction, going green is a step in the right direction.

Keep reading to learn the basics of building and designing an eco-friendly home and what to look for in your builders.

Building a Smaller Home

Downsizing is the first step towards an eco-friendly home design. Having fewer rooms means lower utility bills and a space that’s easy to keep both warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The most important thing is to find eco-friendly home builders who know exactly how to build a green home. You can talk to them about your ideas, materials, budget, and the type of energy you want to use.

Also, many local and state governments offer a green homes grant that you can apply for if you’re building an eco-friendly home.

Using Reclaimed and Recycled Materials

Using reclaimed and recycled materials is a great way to set a solid foundation for an eco-friendly home. Builders and contractors specializing in green homes will use the best materials for your type of home based on your budget, environment, weather, and personal preferences.

You can also ask them to use recycled materials wherever possible. These are not only cheaper but also better for the environment. Some examples include bamboo, wool insulation, Structural Insulation Panels (SIPS), reclaimed wood, bioplastics and biocomposites, and hemp concrete.

Bringing Eco-Friendly Inside

Another important aspect of green homes is eco-friendly home decor. You can bring eco-friendly inside by using vintage and pre-loved items, shop local from sustainable businesses, and buy handmade items from local artists.

Also, using eco-friendly and sustainable materials in your home is important. These include plants and greenery, hemp fabrics, wooden floors, non-toxic paint, LED lighting, and natural materials like wood, bamboo, and recycled plastic.

Insulation and Appliances

Most modern appliances are made to save energy and be eco-friendly. You’ll recognize them by the Energy Star sticker that states the type and amount of energy the appliance uses. The most eco-friendly and energy-saving appliances are A+ marked with a green arrow.

At the same time, you can also make eco friendly home improvements. For example, replace old windows and doors for eco-friendly ones, close any gaps and cracks in the walls, and use high-quality insulation while building the house.

Building Eco-Friendly Homes Are Easy with These Tips

Whether this is your first home you’re building from scratch or you’re turning to eco-friendly homes for your next house, going green is the way of the future.
