DIYer’s Guide: How to Use Waterproofing Paint for Exterior Walls

February 21, 2023

Diyers guide how to use waterproofing paint for exterior walls | lets be game changers lets be game changers

Taking the time to waterproof your walls can save you a lot of money in the long run because it will protect them from water, wind and the elements. Exterior waterproofing paint is a great option for DIYers who want to take on the job themselves. Not only is it easy to use, but it’s also cost-effective and can be found at most home improvement stores or online. Plus, it doesn’t require a lot of special tools or skills. Let’s explore the steps for using waterproofing paint for exterior walls, so that you can do the job yourself. From properly preparing the walls to applying the paint and ensuring proper coverage, we’ll be walking you through the entire process. So let’s get started!

Preparing the Walls for Waterproofing

Before you begin applying waterproofing paint to your exterior walls, there are a few things you’ll want to do first. To start with, you’ll want to make sure that the exterior walls are in good condition. You don’t want to use waterproofing paint on a wall that’s already showing signs of decay or damage. If there are cracks in the walls, you’ll want to seal them before waterproofing. If there are any holes or gaps in the wall’s surface, you’ll want to patch them up with a wall patching compound first, too. Your last step will be to clean the walls and make sure they’re free of dirt, debris and old paint. You can do this with a good bristle brush and some warm water.

Applying Waterproofing Paint

Once your walls are clean and ready for waterproofing, you can begin applying the paint. Before you start painting, though, make sure that you’ve correctly mixed the paint with water. You should use a paint sprayer to apply the paint to save time, but you can use a roller too.

  • You can either spray the paint directly onto your walls, or you can apply a special paint-on primer first and then spray the walls with waterproofing paint.
  • If you do apply primer, make sure to use a waterproof primer, as regular primer may not be enough to protect your walls.
  • Once you’ve applied the paint, let it cure for a day or two until it’s completely dry.
  • Once it’s dry, you can begin painting the rest of the exterior walls.
  • Make sure you apply at least two heavy coats of paint to ensure the best level of protection possible.
  • Note: You may want to consider getting a paint sprayer if you plan on doing a lot of DIY projects. Paint sprayers can make applying paint much easier and faster.

Tips for Proper Coverage

The most important part of using waterproofing paint for exterior walls is making sure you’re applying it properly to get the best level of protection. You’ll want to make sure that you’re covering the entire wall’s surface, including the top, bottom and sides. You may even want to apply paint to the roof if it’s in a low-lying or flood-prone area. Make sure to apply at least two thick coats of paint to ensure proper coverage. Once the paint is dry, you can begin to do a few finishing touches to ensure the best level of protection. You’ll want to put a clean rain gutter on the roof and seal any other areas of the exterior walls that may let water in. You may also want to trim any overhanging branches or shrubs that could potentially get in the way of your roof. This will help ensure that water isn’t able to build up underneath your roof and cause water damage to your exterior walls.

The Final Touch

Exterior walls are an important part of any home, as they’re what protects the building from water, wind, and the elements. Over time, these walls can become worn down and damaged, which can lead to water damage to the rest of the home. Using waterproofing paint can help prevent this damage, as it’s able to protect the walls from water and keep the interior of the home dry and safe.
