How to Protect Your Wood Floors to Make Your Investment Last

March 16, 2020

how to protect your wood floors to make your investment last

Hardwood floors are often associated with a classic feeling. They add a certain warmth to your house and make it appear historical and timeless.

They’re lovely to look at, but hardwood floors are easily damaged due to wear and tear. This means that you’ll definitely want to protect your new wood floor in order to ensure that it lasts.

Try these tips to keep your new wood floors looking good for years to come.

Protect New Wood Floors with Rugs

It doesn’t have to be difficult to prevent scratches on wood floors. One way to prevent scratches is to use layers of rugs.

These offer loads of protection while being cool decorating ideas. Layering rugs, especially in areas like entryways, will help you to minimize wear and tear on your wood floor.

Placing rugs near entries captures any dirt so that it does not make its way onto your wood floors.

Keep Shoes Near Doorways

Keeping and leaving your shoes near your doorway is a good way to protect your floors. What you can do is build a shoebox and place it at the main entrance of the home.

This prevents scratching by lowering the amount of dirt on your wood floors.

Put Felt Pads on Your Furniture Feet

Felt pads are great for putting on your furniture. You can opt for adhesive ones and replace them when necessary.

These are super protective for your floor because they cushion the impact of bumps from tables and chair legs.

Put Plastic Slides on Metal Furniture

Protecting your wood floors from furniture damage is crucial. If you’ve got barstools or metal furniture that can easily damage your new wood floor’s finish, you need to use plastic floor glides.

Adding felt pads to the plastic slides gives extra protection and prevents spinning.

Do Regular Sweeping and Mopping

Getting rid of dirt on your wood floors will help them stay beautiful. The key is to use a traditional vacuum or broom to do regular cleaning.

Follow up with light mopping, using a damp mop. Also, use appropriate floor cleaners. Choosing a mop and floor cleaner ideal for your finish is a plus.

Maintain Coating

The state of your wood floor’s top coating is normally an indication of the state of your floors. Never leave your floor uncoated except for a few days.

The coating wears down in high traffic areas like hallways and living rooms. It’s good to occasionally refinish your floors. Consider using an industrial floor coating to make it even longer lasting.

Classic Touch

To keep that classic touch, you need to know how to protect your wood floor. New wood floors are great to look at, but if you are not careful, they will become damaged over time.

This means you will have to perform repairs. However, this is not necessary if you maintain the coating, clean regularly, and avoid scratches from furniture and dirt from shoes.
