How to Take Care of Your Plants and Garden

December 13, 2019

Plants, much like children, need constant care and attention while growing. Beautiful gardens do not simply happen. They are as a result of delicate and deliberate regular maintenance. Aside from maintaining your outdoor water fountains (like this one from Soothing Company), it is also imperative that you give time to attend to your garden in order to positively impact its outcome. Taking care of plants is easy, especially if you are passionate about it. Whether you are a full-time worker or always at home, with these tips, you can spend even less time in the garden and still grow beautiful plants in your home.

Plants rely on sunlight for growth using a unique process called photosynthesis. While keeping plants at strategic locations in your home may look good, chances are they will not survive for long unless they get enough sunlight. Some plants only need 1 hour of sunlight, while others need between 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. You should learn all about the kind of plants you have.

Water Regularly

Water is a source of life for all living things. Plants depend on water to keep from drying up and dying. Water consumption varies with each season. Plants require much less water during winter than they do in the summer. This is because the heat of summer evaporates water from the ground, thereby drying up the soil faster. Use a hose or a garden sprinkler to water your garden at least once a day during the dry season. You may obtain quality reinforced garden hoses and sprinklers, among other gardening tools, from Spares2You for less than £10. If you are not always around, get an automated sprinkler to water the garden at a convenient time.

Use Clean Tools

A common mistake most garden owners do is to simply rinse their gardening tools with water. Plants do get affected by diseases, much like animals on a farm. An infected tool can easily spread a disease from one plant to another or one garden to another if you lend your tools to your neighbour. Dip your tools for about 5 minutes in isopropyl alcohol or bleach to disinfect regularly.

Nourish with Fertilizer

Fertilizer is like food to the soil. It replenishes vital nutrients consumed by plants from the soil. Over time, the soil fertility degrades which is bad for the plants. You may revitalize your soil by adding fertilizers every few weeks. There are various types of fertilizers for different kinds of soils. Some are water-soluble, while others are solid. If you prefer a more organic fertilizer, consider getting animal manure from your local farm.

Remove Weeds and Dead Plants

Weeds are unwanted plants that grow around gardens. They are aggressive and sneaky. They compete for nutrients with your plants. Weeds should be dealt with immediately before they take over your gardening space. Weeds and dead plants need to be removed regularly to make way for healthy flowers to blossom.

Anyone can own a small plant or an outdoor mini-garden. With proper care and attention, your plants will flourish and make you a proud homeowner. Just be sure to protect the flourishing garden with garden fencing to keep pesky deer and other wildlife out. Simply ensure that the plants get enough sunlight, have a rich soil to grow on, and are watered regularly. Keep your tool clean and the weeds away.
